SMTP Authentication
These instruction will help you make the changes to continue to be able to send mail using various mail clients (mail programs, such as Outlook Express). We have been reluctant to make our customers authenticate to send mail, instead opting to use our ip addresses as the determining factor. Lately we have seen a dialup user, who is randomly assigned valid ip addresses, and then uses various non-sensical usernames, sending termendous amounts of mail. The increased traffic, more than 10 times normal, has caused the mail server to run slow to say the least. We need to stop this person, or more likely a virus, and this is the best way to do it. We will now require smtp authentication. Making the change is very easy, and instruction are below for the various programs. Some programs automatically default to these settings, so if you find a check mark already there, you don't have to change a thing.
|
In Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express: Open the program, then on the top menu bar go tools. From there you want to click on accounts. If not already, click on the mail tab. Highlight (single click) your mail account. Then click the button "Properties". Click on the servers tab. Put a check mark in the box that says "My server requires authentication". Click apply and ok. That's it!
|
In Thunderbird, again open the program. Go to accounts settings, outgoing server, and edit. Be sure there is a check mark where it say "Use name and password".

In IncrediMail again, open the program, and on the top menu bar click on tools, then click accounts. Click on "Properties". Now click the servers tab. You will see the window above. Under Outgoing Server, put a check mark by "My server requires authentication". | In Eudora, there are only two steps. Again open the program, and on the top menu bar go to tools. Now click on options. If not already, click on the category "Getting Started". Be sure "Allow Authentification" is checked. |
