Windows XP Setup:
These instruction will guide through the setup process for creating a dial up networking connection for Southwestern New Mexico On-Line. Since there are various ways XP can be initially setup, you may see different options then those shown. The key is to get to the New Connection Wizard. If you have previously had a connection, then you can get to the New Connection Wizard by going to start, network connections and show all connections. The steps outlined assume the most common default settings. If you have changed to the classic start menu, then you will see different options.

1. Get to the control pannel by going to start, and control pannel in the second column. With default settings, you will see "Pick a Category". Choose "Network and Internet Connections". Choose "Pick a Task" and "Setup or Change your Internet Connection". Now click setup. This will open the New Connection Wizard. You should see a screen similar to the one on the left. Click next.

2. Now you will now need to answer three questions. On the first box select "Connect to the Internet", click next. Next, select "Setup my Connection Manually", click next. And then select "Connect using a dial-up modem", and click next.

3. Now you need to enter the name of the computer (ISP) you are dialing. Type SWNM (as shown to the right), and click next.

4. Enter the phone number. Windows XP doesn't care about the area code like previous versions of windows. Just enter the phone number (5444336). If you have call waiting on your phone line and want to disable it while you are on the internet, then enter (*70,5444336). *70 is the Qwest code to disable call waiting. If you have call waiting and it is not disabled you most likely will get knocked off line each time you receive an incoming call. (See example setup to left).

5. You now need to tell Windows your user name and password. Your user name is the unique name you selected to use our service when you signed up. This is not the same as an email address. For example if your user name is jetson, then your email address would be jetson@swnm.com. In this section we want the user name only. Then enter your password, and confirm your password. Remember, passwords are case sensitive. That means "A" is not the same as "a". Be sure to type the password exactly as your requested it to be setup. We find leaving all three defaults on this page checked works best. This will allow all users access to the dial-up account, set the connection as default, and enable the new Windows XP firewall.

6. You will now see the screen to the left. We recommend you place a check in "Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop". Click on finish.

Now we need to modify the connection properties. When you click finish, you should see "Pick a Control Pannel Option". Select "Network Connections". Alternately you can get to the connection by going to start, network connections in the second column, and show all connections. You will now find an icon called "SWNM". Right click on this icon, and then left click properties on the pop-up menu. Click on the "Networking" tab. Highlight (single click) on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click properties.

7. We now need to add the DNS, or Domain Name Server addresses. Name servers are used to resolve the full url to the IP number. For example, www.swnm.com is actually 204.252.56.131. DNS servers resolve the name to the number which is actually what your computer uses. You should see the screen to the right. The top section should remain "Obtain an IP address automatically". The bottom section should be changed to: "Use the following DNS server addresses. Now type the following numbers. For prefered DNS, use 65.241.28.10, and for alternate DNS, 65.241.28.54. Then click OK, and OK again. These are the latest DNS numbers.

You are now ready to use your new connection. Get back to your desktop, and double click on the SWNM Icon. Then click dial. You will see the progress as it dials.. dialing.. verifying user name and password... and registering your computer on the network. Once connected, use Internet Explorer (or your favorite browser) to go to websites, and Outlook Express (or YOUR email client) to check email.
